Choosing the Right Collar for your Doberman

There's no question that Dobermans who understand and react positively to commands have an enhanced bond with their pet parents. And this ties up directly with the huge array of training aids on the market to train dogs of all ages, different sizes, and breeds with individual breed traits like the sensitive and energetic Doberman.

Our dog training experts poured over reviews, tried out dog training e-collars for Dobermans, spent hundreds of hours, and checked out sites like Amazon, Petco, and Chewy. They also wanted the best Doberman training collars that allowed for low stim training and tone-only modes for no shock training to correct behavior gently. We wanted rechargeable dog e-collars with money-back guarantees and good customer service based in the US.

In this buying guide for the best no-shock option collars for the Doberman Pinscher, we found the most humane dog training collars to help positive trainers and pet parents capture their Doberman's attention when they need it most. Dobermans are one of the best working dogs and have excelled in military and police dog work. They also do well as therapy dogs and search and rescue dogs.

This sensitive, intelligent, affectionate, and alert breed is prone to anxiousness with harsh training methods. Bark Beyond products are designed for sensitive breeds like the Doberman and allow for positive training.

How to Train a Doberman With an E-Collar?

We scrolled through our favorite site, Reddit, and looked through Doberman safe dog training e-collar comments to see what professional trainers and Doberman pet parents had to say. We found some great e-collar training advice for Doberman pet parents.

Verified Redditor Comments

"My Doberman didn't have a hard time learning to stay off counters and people, but there was nothing I could do to stop his over the top aggressive barking at neighbors walking by my property. Even if I tried to go outside and retrieve him, he'd run away from me and continue barking madly until person was out of sight! Got an e-collar to correct this bad behavior and it worked quickly."

The same Redditor adds, "My trainer recommended I never use the beeping noise function of e-collar because it can negatively sensitize the dog to beeping noises, which are common in modern life. Basically, he told me to simultaneously use my voice & visual hand signal commands; if that doesn't work, follow with a vibration warning, and if that doesn't work, follow with electric shock, and if shock doesn't work, increase the shock level until it's effective. Of course, always test your collar on yourself first so you know exactly what the dog is experiencing, and use the lowest setting the dog will respond to."

We found this training advice good. "E-collars are amazing because you have the utmost control of stimulus intensity. Meaning you can use just above detectable stimulation to communicate with the dog. The reason why vibrate freaks out your dog is because it is super intense and abrupt and you can't actually decrease that simulation. Don't use vibrate until your dog knows what to expect and what to do when he receives stimulation from a collar."

The same Redditor continues to explain how to use an e-collar on a Doberman.

"To explain to your dog what he is supposed to do when he receives a stimulus from the e-collar, go back to something he knows and is very comfortable with. To acclimate our dog to the e-collar, we first used it as an unconditioned stimulus and paired it with a behavior that he knows and gave good rewards for doing it. You want to condition the simulation such that he figures out when he feels he should be doing that thing. After he was acclimated, we then transitioned him to using it as an extension of our negative markers and now primarily use it as a negative reinforcement."

The Redditor also gives some great training advice on how to use e-collars correctly:

"For introducing your dog to the e-collar, you want the stimulus to be paired with a reward (similar to charging a clicker noise with a reward). So, for my dog's first e-collar session, we walked into a field on a leash and let him sniff. We first needed to see what he could feel. We had already tested the electrical current settings on our palms and went just lower than the lowest setting we could feel. We then incremented up until we saw him react to the stim. The reaction should be really subtle, like his ears direct back at you, or he looks over his shoulder, or he pauses sniffing. Once he reacted, we immediately said his name and his reward marker, "Yes," and started moving backwards with slight leash pressure to get him back to you, rewarding him immediately and enthusiastically. Then free and back to sniffy walk on the leash. Rinse and repeat. Dobes are smart, about 5 to 10 sets of this and he knows that simulation means come get some yummy snacks. And you can drop calling their name and the leash pressure and just be giving him praise and treats."

The Redditor goes on to say, "If you need help understanding this, then you should seek a trainer who knows how to use low stim training. There are some franchises like Sit Means Sit that use the e-collar as escape training, which can be effective but doesn't work for all dogs. There are different philosophies on how to best use this tool. Someone who knows multiple methods and has trained a lot of different kinds of dogs in different contexts (like pet, service, sport, and working) is your best bet at finding a true expert who will be able to read you and your dog and help you get the most out of the tool. Definitely worth getting help with this kind of training. It is a very useful tool, and you don't want to sully it with muffled, unclear training."
